2024 Shloer Chase Betting Odds at Cheltenham racecourse

Sunday, 17 November 2024

We’ve got some fantastic autumn racing at Cheltenham taking place, with the Shloer Chase being run over two miles. Jonbon is an eight-year-old with bags of talent and it’s hard to dismiss the favourite’s strong chance of winning in this contest. However, there are some other quality horses in the field and that includes Edwardstone.

Boothill and Master Chewy are also worthy of consideration although it all comes down to whether Jonbon continues to operate at the top of his game. He enjoyed a string of wins last season and there could be more to come from a runner who could well be back at this track to win the Queen Mother Champion Chase next March.

2024 Shloer Chase Tips

Jonbon enjoyed a stellar season last time out and there could be more fireworks from a horse who might not yet have hit his potential. The seven-year-old was able to secure a victory by four lengths in the bet365 Celebration Chase at Sandown, fending off favourite El Fabiolo to really announce his credentials as a quality runner.

Previously to this came a victory in the Melling Chase at Aintree, this coming over two miles and four furlongs. Jonbon finished ahead of Conflated on that occasion, although a word of warning comes in the form of a second-placed finish at Cheltenham in January when being sent off as the 1/4 favourite to claim a victory.

Edwardstone could be the most viable challenger to the favourite and the horse is still going strong at the age of ten. Alan King will hope that his runner is able to stay in the running after finishing third in the bet365 Celebration Chase, having fallen in his last outing at Cheltenham when in a promising position in the Queen Mother Champion Chase.

Boothill and Master Chewy are the other horses who could run into a place, with the former having been susceptible to falling in recent races. This happened at Kempton and Newbury before a fourth-placed finish in the bet365 Celebration Chase. Master Chewy was seen more recently when finishing fourth out of ten runners in the Byrne Group Handicap Chase at Ascot.

2023 Shloer Chase Tips

Jonbon was busy collecting wins last season and he signed off with a victory in the bet365 Celebration Chase at Sandown Park at the end of April. That was achieved over one mile, seven and a half furlongs, with the horse able to oblige by nearly four lengths. The horse enjoyed a facile win at Aintree and that came after finishing second at the Cheltenham Festival.

In the Arkle Challenge Trophy Novices’ Chase, the horse found El Fabiolo too good although the plain fact is that Jonbon is the one to beat, with the runner having scored six times in the past seven appearances. It will be interesting to see whether Edwardstone is able to put up a decent fight, with Alan King saddling the nine-year-old for this one.

The horse was last seen finishing well down the pecking order in the Queen Mother Champion Chase, with the runner sent off at 15/8 before struggling to achieve a fluent jumping performance. The horse had previously run well when finishing second in the Albert Bartlett Clarence House Chase on 28 January.

Nube Negra has been a solid performer during his career although the horse didn’t travel well in the Champion Chase at Cheltenham, with the runner never travelling on that occasion. In the Ladbrokes Desert Orchid Chase last December, the runner was thirteen lengths behind Editeur Du Gite and improvement will be needed here.

2022 Cheltenham Shloer Chase Tips

Edwardstone enjoyed a string of victories last season, with the eight-year-old looking to enhance his reputation and he’s trading at odds-on when it comes to the Shloer Chase. The horse was previously sent off as the 5/2 favourite to win the 2022 Arkle Chase at the Cheltenham Festival and duly obliged when winning by over four lengths.

However, Edwardstone then went to Aintree and was unable to oblige when being sent off as the 4/7 favourite. Gentleman De Mee was able to lower his colours on that occasion and there’s always an element of unpredictability when it comes to the first outing of the campaign, with plenty of other horses lining up here.

Nube Negra has had a fine career of his own to date. Dan Skelton’s charge was the winner of the Shloer Chase twelve months ago when landing the spoils at odds of 9/4. He was able to beat Politologue and Put The Kettle On in a small field, with the horse able to adapt to good conditions and could yet end up running in the Queen Mother Champion Chase.

However, Nube Negra has plenty of improvement to find in order to win this race. There was a distant third placed finish at Sandown behind Greaneteen and perhaps Editeur Du Gite offers better value after a promising recent run at Cheltenham in a handicap chase.
