2021 NZ Derby Betting Odds at Ellerslie racecourse

Saturday, 06 March 2021

The New Zealand Derby is one of the biggest horse races in New Zealand, with this race having been in operation since 1875 and this is a battle over twelve furlongs or 2,400 metres where some of the leading Australasian runners compete for a large sum of prize money.

Indeed, the overall purse for the 2020 New Zealand Derby was $1,000,000 and we might expect a similar pot to be available this time around, with this historic horse race at Ellerslie Racecourse dating back to 1875 and we’ll see some talented three-year-olds battling it out for the top honours on the day of the race.

Brando and Aegon Favourites to Win 2021 NZ Derby

Brando and Aegon are currently trading as the market leaders to win the 2021 New Zealand Derby, with the former being trained by Jamie Richards and this runner has impressive career stats which has seen the horse achieve three first places and one runner-up spot during the current campaign.

The latest victory for Brando occurred on Boxing Day and would appear to set him up nicely for the Derby, with the horse having been sent off as odds-on favourite for that clash and jockey Opie Bosson is likely to get the ride again this time around.

Aegon was a dramatic winner of the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas in early October and it would be a remarkable achievement if the same charge can secure another win in a classic race this thoroughbred season, with the three-year-old achieving the narrowest of victories when obliging in the above race.

Frontman Could be a Main Contender for New Zealand Derby

Frontman is trading at a bigger price for an NZ Derby win although the horse could be the best place value in the race after recently coming to the fore at Rotorua, with the runner coming from the renowned Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman stable and we could see a real challenge emerging based on recent evidence.

Having won a trial at Te Aroha, there was everything to like about the horse’s maiden victory over 1400 metres and connections think there is plenty more to come from this charge ahead of the big race.
