2026 London Gold Cup Betting Odds at Newbury racecourse

Saturday, 16 May 2026

There’s no clear favourite for the London Gold Cup Handicap, although Archivist has been backed over the past few days and now sits at the head of the market. William Haggas trains a three-year-old who was second on his seasonal debut and that result has been an ongoing trait for a horse who will be ridden by Tom Marquand in this encounter.

Nebras has also secured back-to-back runner-up spots this term and the John & Thady Gosden saddles a runner who will be top weight for this handicap encounter. Saddadd could go well for Roger Varian and the same applies to the Aidan O’Brien-trained Genealogy who returns after a break to line up here.

2025 London Gold Cup Handicap Betting Tips

Some punters might be somewhat wary of backing Archivist considering that the horse has racked up a series of runner-up spots in recent outings. William Haggas’ horse was last seen being runner-up at Nottingham last month, with this coming after following home Smoken at the same track in the middle of October.

Nebras is another runner who been finishing second in recent outings. That runner-up effort came at Newmarket in early May, with that coming after following home the winner at Southwell last time out. There might instead be some merit in siding with Saddadd who has already demonstrated plenty of quality for trainer Roger Varian.

Last time out, there was a second-placed finish out of nine runners at Newbury in April, with this coming after a solid showing at Kempton on the all-weather. There will also be a seasonal debut for Genealogy who ran well last campaign even if the previous outing at Newmarket saw the charge somehow outclassed in the Autumn Stakes.

Previously to this came a victory in a maiden race at Punchestown, with Light As Air also from the same stable and he was able to finish second last time out. This horse is carrying less weight than his stablemate and might benefit over one mile and two furlongs, with Wave Rider having been runner-up in the last showing.

Chantilly is the horse that has been respected the most by the layers when it comes to the London Gold Cup Handicap, with Aidan O’Brien training a horse that was able to claim a victory at Leopardstown at the beginning of April. Sent off as the 7/4 favourite, there was a victory over one mile and two furlongs on heavy ground.

This came after a success in the Irish EBF Maiden over a mile at the Curragh, with Ryan Moore on board the market leader, although there is some stiff competition in the form of King’s Gambit. Harry Charlton is the trainer of a horse makes a seasonal debut and the runner was second last time out.

The horse was second out of six runners at Newbury in September after previously landing a victory at the same course. However, there could be a lively challenge from Fighter Command and there was plenty to like about the way in which the John & Thady Gosden-trained runner was able to triumph at Windsor.

Goodwood Odyssey also has a solid official rating and there was a success at Sandown Park against eleven other runners. The horse was able to oblige over nearly two lengths in a race over one mile and two furlongs. This came after finishing second place on the all-weather at Kempton Racecourse over the distance of one mile.
