Thousands of racegoers attend the Hipódromo da Gávea throughout the course of a calendar year and the principal race is the Grande Premio Brasil which is run over twelve furlongs for three-year-olds. This race takes place in June and it has been in operation since 1933.

The race takes place over 2,400 metres and there is also the Triple Crown which is comprised of the Grande Premio do Rio de Janeiro, the Grande Premio Francisco Eduardo de Paula Machado and the Grande Premio Cruzeiro du Sul.
